It takes work even to join the Comedy Club

A man asked Jerry Seinfeld for “The Secret.”

Meaning, what was the secret to his success?

Jerry told him – “It’s easy. You just need to get out a blank calendar with a square for each day and every day write jokes for ONE HOUR. Mark an X on the day you did that. And create an endless chain of X’s. I started doing that in 1976.”

I think of men like leadership guru John Maxwell. Someone saw him speaking in front of a large audience and did the math for how much money he drew in for an hour of speaking. The man asked Mr. Maxwell, how could he do something like that?

John said, “Well to do what I do, you have to be willing to do what I DID.” For years, every day, John has a consistent daily method of operation. Everyday he files, he writes, he reads. Day in and day out. When he feels like it, and when he doesn’t.

Do you have a side gig? Do you want success in any side gig? Do you want to improve a skill? Get anther degree? Get in shape? You need daily, consistent persistent action.

It’s challenging today because we have so many distractions. We can be like Doug the dog in Pixar’s “UP” — laser focused and then SQUIRREL!!!!

How can you be more consistent – and persistent today?
——

How can you be more consistent in your side gig business? Or in your main gig? Or in your comedy gig?

Today – get alone. Maybe you don’t need to get out your calendar yet, but get out a notebook. Ask yourself some hard questions.  Journal them.

1) What is your WHY? WHY do you want success? It usually helps to find something bigger than “I want to be able to make more money.” It can be an attainable goal, like I want to cover my daughter’s wedding. And when you reach that you can raise the bar. It can be – I want to be helping people with addictions instead of selling them booze and Camels at my job.

2) WHO WINS if you FAIL?  Who WINS if you succeed? IF you fail, everyone who dared to dream but won’t leave the comforts of their coach wins. If you fail, your critics win. Those that mock side gigs win. Those that say, “See you should have stayed in the Crab bucket with us! Serves you right to think you could make it! You think you are better than us?” Those folks will win if you fail. Your supporters, your spouse and children, your mission field, your church, your grandchildren, your audience, and those praying for an answer will win, if you win.
3) If you succeed, who will you inspire?   You may inspire your kids. Maybe inspire a kid off the street that they can break out of their shackles and not be stuck in a discouraging life. Maybe this person can’t play basketball and throw a football so they don’t think they have any ticket out of there.
4) Who will you make most proud?
5) Who will thank you if you are successful?  And what will success look like?
6) What are the traits of the future YOU?  (ex: I am fit, successful, an engaged devoted husband and father who leaves a legacy, and being a man of  influence.

Choose to SHOW UP to your business  AND LIFE as your future version of YOU.

Want bigger results?  Show up bigger.    Each day have a daily method of operation and get addicted to your activity — do it every day for 21 days – mark it off on your calender – and you will become habitually focused on showing up.  Day in and Day out.

Regardless of results.

And that is how the results come in.
