OVERWHELMED juggling all you have on your plate or the financial burden you have to carry?
For those struggling to get started on their side business or still undecided if they even want to start one-
First, know this-
I get it – the struggle is real.
I know the feeling of those animals in the picture- having so much on you you feel ready to crumble. Instead of ready to rumble.
When it comes to a side business it can feel you can’t win at times-
When you are not working and have time to build a business it’s too high stress to make something happen and so you do nothing but worry for the 6 months you were out of work. Days pass, and that emergency fund runs out and you panic and take another job you hate.
When you land a job after 6 months of doing nothing – your FB post announcing your new job (that you really aren’t thrilled you had to settle for) gets 300 LIKES and 8 Shares and 94 Congratulations –
But go and announce you started a business because you lost your job – and you get crickets –
When you have a full time job you are too exhausted at the end of the night so instead your natural default is to do nothing after work except beat yourself up for not getting your business going-
Or you waste time scrolling Facebook or playing app games like Fishdom or Soliatire or making endless lists and waiting for all the stars to align to finally get started.
And you start – and that day the dog swallows a sock and needs emergency surgery, or the children have a flu bug that runs through the entire family and if you had a job you would have sucked it up and went to work but because you are home, you are catching up on 12 years of sleep deprivation.
You wait to feel like doing the work. That never happens because you never felt like going to work at your job either. But if you didn’t show up, you would get fired. The threat of firing is less real when you are your own boss.
But when you do finally actually do find this hidden stamina after attending a 3 day $997 webinar on how to make money one line– you did reach the point where it’s just about to get off the ground but by now you got burned out so you pull back and isolate and don’t want to leave the safe comfort zone. And you now are in panic mode as that webinar purchase was supposed to pay the mortgage that month.
You get tired on the job- you go brew some coffee or down an energy drink. You get tired working from home you flip on ESPN or Netflix and fall asleep with the dog next to you and you lost another day to get started. And now you are 5 episodes in of a new series you never noticed before and there are 14 left – and 7 more seasons. And by the time you finish them, seasons 15 and 16 are released.
You know others who fumbled their way to success but still it looks like they have this mystical touch you don’t have.
It feels like a closed door and you are on the outside and there isn’t even a doorbell to ring. No one even knows you are outside.
So you give up –
And go back to the job like an escaped convict who just got sent to solitary confinement after tasting Freedom for a few moments. Determined to really enjoy prison living this time and be grateful you have a cell and conditions a bit nicer than Shawshank.
Entrepreneur, do I know you?
Are we just doomed to fail? Is there a code we just can’t crack? Or are we doing a lot of it wrong and simply trying to become an entrepreneur with an employee mindset?
One key is the very reasons you DON’T do the work to move your business forward –
Are the SAME reasons you need to do it.
Maybe you don’t think you have the money to get a business going – or the time – or the energy – or the skills-
That is exactly why you want to just jump in when you see an opportunity and then figure it out.
You won’t get more time or money later to do a side gig when your job can’t cover inflation now.
You can’t wait for retirement when you have to work until 4:30 the day of your funeral.
You won’t get skills waiting on the sidelines.
Here is a non exhaustive list for some tips to get success-
1) Understand the Mental hurdles to overcome compared to the employee mindset.
You go to work when you don’t feel like it
You don’t expect instant success at a job
You don’t expect the job to be absolutely perfect in all areas of it
You don’t expect to work there for a month – skip training – don’t put any hours in – and wonder why you don’t get a paycheck.
2) Get a daily Method of Operation and a business plan that will produce inevitable success – not instant. And commit to a year. If you want to get in shape you don’t join a gym and attend every 2 months for a couple days.
You want consistency and persistence and start small and exercise that muscle. Yes wanting to reaching out to 1000 a month is great – but for now reach out to 3 a day which is 100/month.
Understand over the long term you can build a part time business.
3) Master the fundamentals first before you buy intense courses or learn AI or buy ads etc. In basketball you want to master the layups and free throws and later you can practice blindfolded half court 3 pointers.
Learn to Contact and invite people to have a look at your product, service or opportunity.
And just see if people are open. Don’t beg people to join and if they tell you NO often it’s NOT NOW.
4) Be coachable. We have a team- Team Unity is one example of other entrepreneurs who have cracked the code, and willing to show you the ropes – and this provides a blue prints for success and footprints to follow.
You don’t buy a Dominoes and say you won’t follow the system and instead plan to grill hot dogs and lobster rolls.
Use tools like videos and zoom meeting to explain the system. If you are building a team it’s not as much as what works but what duplicates. You want a system that anyone can follow.
That is why franchises are easier to have success than a start up doing it all on your own.
5) Get started – and understand that side businesses are real businesses. It’s OK to not have a Shark Tank change the world idea right now- many of those folks found solutions to problems while they had a regular business or started somewhere smaller.
You literally can have the feeling of owning your own franchise without the headaches AND COSTS of a brick-and-mortar franchise when you see you can have a Franchise-at-your-fingertips with an online or digital business.
Want to own a bank? That seems to be just for the very upper echelon – but for $500 you can be a DBO- digital bank owner – in a Visa Franchise opportunity. Ask me how. You would spend $500 in bathroom supplies if you owned your own physical bank just to get it started.
You need to embrace the possibilities and have an attitude that this is your ticket to success. Jump in with all you have and if it’s not a good fit, you are already in motion, but usually you want to stick it out until you see success. Most quit 2 feet from success.
You can buy a Dominoes for $250K and not turn a profit for 5 years. But they don’t abandon ship after 6 months.
You can instead get a portable franchise at your fingertips that you can run anywhere. And be profitable the first week. I made my money back for my bank franchise in a week.
And so just take a step out into the adventure of being an entrepreneur-
Or at the very least become a Savepreneur.
